Yoga for Every Body: Intro to Scaravelli-Lineage Yoga Workshop

Forget perfect poses or impressive flexibility—this isn’t that kind of practice.

Instead, you’re gently invited to tune in to something wiser and more effortless: the quiet intelligence of your bones, the spacious play of your joints, the soft pull of gravity, and the natural, living wisdom woven through your spine.

When you meet your body this way, something beautiful opens—lightness begins to rise, space breathes inside you, and a deep, natural ease quietly arrives.

You’re welcome here, exactly as you are.

Awakening the Spine, book by Vanda Scaravelli. Until her death at ninety-one, Vanda helped transform bodies and lives with her innovative approach to yoga.

Why Scaravelli-Lineage Yoga is for Every Body

The practice of Scaravelli-lineage yoga is not about performing poses nor about needing flexibility. With attention to the bones, joints, gravity, and the natural intelligence of the spine, you’re invited to feel lightness, spaciousness, and ease.

The Yoga lineage of Vanda Scaravelli is a deep, slow, and playful approach to yoga rooted by her time with B.K.S. Iyengar and T.K.V. Desikachar, as well as by her background in Tai Chi and her life as a musician.

The Process of Undoing

This hands-on approach invites you to inhabit your body more fully, gently unwinding habitual and unhelpful movement patterns along the way. As you move toward a pose or asana, attention is brought to the spine, the bones, and how the body relates to gravity.

We practice yielding to gravity and growing up and away from it, creating the conditions for freeing the spine. Rather than fixing or holding a pose, which can create more tension, we explore rhythmic movement, keeping the body responsive and at ease.

Small details, like the contact of a heel, toe, or the full foot, become sources of support and insight. With steady attention, space and ease are rediscovered within the body, tension softens, and a sense of grounding flows naturally into lightness.

About Vanda Scaravelli

An inspiring figure, Vanda Scaravelli (1908–1999), brought a fresh, deeply intuitive approach to yoga in the West.

She discovered yoga later in life, becoming one of the earliest Western students of two legendary teachers from the Krishnamacharya lineage: the masterful B.K.S. Iyengar, who guided her through asanas with precision and care, and the gentle T.K.V. Desikachar, who opened the profound world of pranayama—yoga breathing—to her. From there, something magical unfolded.

Scaravelli didn’t follow a strict path; instead, she listened deeply to her own body and developed a revolutionary, effortless approach centered on awakening the spine through gravity, breath, and the spine’s natural intelligence.

She explored and refined this beautiful way of moving for decades, collaborating closely with her devoted long-term students—gifted yoga teachers Diane Long and Esther Myers—who lovingly carried her teachings forward and helped evolve what many call a “non-lineage” yoga: free from rigid systems, rich in personal discovery.

Her timeless book, Awakening the Spine, is widely regarded as a modern classic (praised enthusiastically by Yoga Journal and many others). It continues to invite practitioners worldwide into a gentler, more spacious way of practicing—one that feels liberating rather than demanding.

If you're drawn to yoga that feels alive, kind, and deeply connected to your own body’s wisdom, Vanda’s legacy is an open, welcoming invitation.

Scaravelli-lineage yoga continues to be taught into the 21st century by teachers such as Nicole Setty, who will be leading you through this workshop.
