About Boulder Ki Aikido

About Boulder Ki Aikido

In 1977, Koichi Kashiwaya Sensei established Rocky Mountain Ki Society (RMKS) in Boulder, Colorado to officially begin his dissemination of the martial art of Ki Aikido in the United States.

After twenty years of growth during the 1980's and 1990's, the Boulder and Denver dojos were consolidated and moved to a new home in Westminster, Colorado. In 1999, with the approval and support of both Russell Smith and Kashiwaya Sensei, Abel Villacorta Sensei reopened Boulder Ki Aikido.

About Shin Shin Toitsu Aikido

Aikido with Mind & Body Unified, commonly referred to as Ki-Aikido, was founded in 1971 by 10th degree black belt in Aikikai, Soshu Koichi Tohei Sensei, when he established Ki no Kenkyu Kai (formerly known as Ki Society).

Synthesizing aspects of Buddhism, Taoism, and Confusionism, this version of Aikido was developed by Tohei Sensei from his life experience with his three main teachers: Morihei Ueshiba Sensei (O Sensei, founder of Aikido), Tempu Nakamura Sensei (founder of Shin Shin Toitsu Do, aka Japanese Yoga), and Tetsuju Ogura Sensei (Founder of the IchiKuKai).

About Abel Villacorta Sensei

Born in Peru and raised in NYC from the age of 11, Abel Villacorta Sensei, has been teaching the mind-body coordination principles and self-defense art of Shin Shin Toitsu Aikido in Colorado, since 1995.

Villacorta Sensei currently serves as One Dojo Executive Director as well as Head Instructor of Boulder Ki Aikido.

In the summer of 2022, he achieved the rank of Joden (high rank) in Shin Shin Toitsu Do (“Way of Unifying Mind & Body,” aka Ki Development and Japanese Yoga). This paved the way for his being awarded the rank of Godan (5th degree black belt) in Shin Shin Toitsu Aikido (“Aikido with Mind & Body Unified”) in January 2023.

He is currently certified as an instructor as Associate Lecturer and as Associate Examiner for the Japanese international organization, Shin Shin Toitsu Aikido Kai.

Boulder Martial Arts Ki Aikido Kids Classes

Husband, father of three, business professional in the fields of branding, marketing, design, and entrepreneur, Villacorta Sensei began his practice of Shin Shin Toitsu Aikido in the spring of 1993, under the tutelage of Russell Smith Sensei (5th dan), while attending Colorado State University in Fort Collins.

“I first became interested in martial arts because I wanted a solid discipline to develop my character and a way to feel confident in defending myself. Due to its circular, fluid and effective techniques that harnessed the energy of my opponent, Ki Aikido quickly became a perfect fit.”

Throughout his training, Villacorta Sensei has studied under the guidance of several high-ranking instructors across various styles of Aikido, including week-long immersive seminars and weekend workshops with Shinichi Tohei SenseiDavid Shaner SenseiMorihiro Saito SenseiShinichi Suzuki SenseiChristopher Curtis SenseiRobert Koga SenseiRussell Jones Sensei, and Lael Keen Sensei, among others.

Villacorta Sensei has a genuine dedication for inspiring students of all ages to discover their true inner power and to live life positively. “Over time, this art has become a spiritual path for me. I remain a lifelong student of this profound art by training primarily under the guidance of Kashiwaya Sensei.”
